Walk around a college campus and you will see a wide variety of styles. Every person boy or girl has their own unique fashion sense. Even though the style is unique it usually falls into a category. Here is a list of a few of the most common styles you would find on a college campus.
This seems to be one of the most common styles because under the “sporty” category falls the “workout/comfort” subcategory that majority the campus seems to live in. This general outfit consists of a t-shirt/sweatshirt, leggings (for girls)/sweatpants or gym shorts (for boys). This is a popular style because a college student’s everyday outfit is usually based on comfort since they sit in class all day. “I like to wear leggings and t-shirts or sweatshirts to class because they are more comfortable. Wearing jeans or clothes that are less comfortable make it harder to focus when I’m in class.” Said UofA Sophomore, Kendall Freeze.
This category of style is not necessarily worn by choice but it is seen on campus quite a bit. Being at a University with a large Business school it means that you will see students in suits and ties at least once a day. Most of the students wearing it don’t have a choice necessarily, but it is important to include since many professions require a business casual dress code. The way the students dress can be cute, creative and business appropriate. Sometimes this style/outfit can be boring and look very generic but other times students do a great job and making themselves stand out in a good way.
Boho Chic / Vintage
The Boho Chic look is starting to catch on and become more popular. The first thing I think about when seeing someone wearing this style is Urban Outfitters. I think that most of what that store sells qualifies as Boho. This is another style that people enjoy because of the comfort level. Many of the styles are very flowy, cute but casual. Within the same category, the vintage look is huge. It started with the vintage tee look. Whether it was band tees or just old logos from the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s, people love the look of a tee with ripped jeans and sneakers or chunky boots. Fashion always repeats itself at some point. Something that was super popular in the 90s can come back today and people love it. A lot of styles make a comeback and so whatever it is, it could be considered vintage. “I like to be creative with my outfits so putting together something that is unique is always fun to me,” Lauren Smith, UofA Junior said.
When going to class it is less likely to see someone more dressed up unless there is something special happening that day. So, for people who like to dress in a more “girly” outfit, it is more common to see these outfits when they are being worn out to after-school events or just in everyday life. This style consists of dresses and skirts generally. Bright colors and patterns such as floral or plaid seem to be what most girls that like to dress this way choose. Lighter shoes like sandals or small heels would be what completes this outfit.
Regardless of what your style is, dressing how you like and being yourself is all that matters. Being able to choose and put together out own outfits gives us so much freedom to express ourselves. Fashion is such a powerful tool that can give someone a voice, don’t be afraid to use it.
